Removing barriers to production of climate-resilient sorghum production

DaleAgro designed and executed a strategy to remove barriers and increase access by vulnerable smallholder farmers in Western Kenya to climate-resilient sorghum varieties, value chains, and markets. This was achieved by championing an innovation platform bringing together digital technology providers, climate services agents, agriculture extension workers, farmer groups, and beer manufacturers. The farmers received input loans as well as crop payments through Digifarm mobile application powered by Safaricom Plc as well as seasonal climate information and crop insurance facility by ACRE Africa, while their sorghum was purchased by the East African Malting Ltd, a subsidiary of East African Breweries Ltd. This effort by DaleAgro saw an increase from 150 households in early 2018 to 2250 households in late 2019 taking on sorghum farming and most of them reported increased family incomes from farming.
